UBC Okanagan’s March 10 public forum, Managing Forgetfulness and Aging Successfully, is still a month away but huge demand for tickets already has organizers predicting a capacity crowd at the 850-seat Kelowna Community Theatre.
“We thought this would be a popular topic for our region, but the response has been astonishing,” says Bonnie Bates Gibbs, Director of Alumni and University Relations. “We are already down to a couple of hundred tickets remaining as of Tuesday afternoon, so if people wish to attend, we’re recommending they order tickets right away. They may be gone very soon.”
At the forum, a trio of top experts in brain research from UBC and the University of California will share the latest in brain-related discoveries, as well as tips and strategies that can be used to manage forgetfulness, improve memory, and age successfully.
Moderator for the evening is Alison Paine, Communications Director for the Interior Health Authority. The panelists are:
- Dr. Max Cynader — Director, UBC Brain Research Centre
- Dr. Howard Feldman — Director, UBC Clinic for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders
- Dr. Jonathan Schooler — Professor of Psychology, University of California, Santa Barbara
Free tickets to the event (7 p.m., Monday, March 10) can be booked through SelectYourTickets at 250-762-5050 or selectyourtickets.com. A limited number of rush tickets will be available at the door.
The forum has been funded by Dr. Irving K. Barber, and will officially launch UBC Okanagan’s Celebrate Research Week. Entitled It’s Yours: Building on our Legacy of Research Excellence, the week of March 8 to 15 is a showcase of UBC Okanagan research, spanning all faculties and presenting cutting-edge work in a wide range of fields. Presentations are being held both on and off the UBC Okanagan campus, and a full schedule will soon be available on UBC Okanagan’s website at www.ubc.ca/okanagan.
Online registration is now open for a Celebrate Research Week evening of coffee and creativity with novelist Lynn Coady on March 13, 7 p.m. at the Laurel Packinghouse, 1304 Ellis Street in Kelowna. UBC Okanagan’s first-ever writer in residence, Coady will be interviewed about the writing process “in-conversation”-style with Marion Barschel, the host of CBC Radio’s Daybreak South program. Advance registration is required via the UBC Okanagan website at www.ubc.ca/okanagan.
