High-school, college and UBC Okanagan students and young alumni will have a chance to hear about career possibilities from experienced managers next week, when the Interior Savings UBC Okanagan Mentoring Luncheon Series kicks off its spring sessions.
The Friday, Feb. 6, mentoring luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Coast Capri Hotel in Kelowna. It will focus on management careers, featuring a panel of alumni speakers relating on personal terms the highs and lows, challenges and rewards of their own career paths.
“We have covered business and finance before, but this mentoring session will look at management as a function that isn’t necessarily tied to traditional business roles,” says Brenda Tournier, Manager of Alumni and Community Relations at UBC Okanagan.
“Students have shown incredible interest in management careers. We very quickly sold out all the seats for students, and have just a few left for young alumni,” Tournier says. “The event will include brief presentations from a panel of UBC alumni speakers, and each of the student tables will have mentors who are working in a wide range of capacities and sectors, including entrepreneurs, administrators, accountants, and sales people.”
Panelist for Friday’s luncheon are:
- David Bond, BCom ’95 – Chartered Accountant and Partner with KPMG LLP Chartered Accountants
- Sandra Broughton, MSc ’92 – Regional Administrator for the B.C. Cancer Agency – Centre for the Southern Interior
- Gordon Fitzpatrick, BA ’83 – President of CedarCreek Estate Winery
- Cindy Wilker, BCom ‘84 – Vice-president, Supply Chain, at Sun-Rype Products Ltd.
Each panelist will speak for up to 10 minutes. A further 20 to 30 minutes is set aside for table discussions with mentors at student tables. Young alumni of UBC Okanagan can contact Brenda Tournier at 250-807-8167 to register for the luncheon.
