Artists and scholars who push boundaries are focus of free presentations
UBC’s Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS) is launching an exciting new research series, Emerging Visions: Digital Media and Culture, starting this month.
Monthly public presentations from September through April concern digital media and the rapidly changing world of arts and culture. This series presents innovative artists and scholars from across North America who push the boundaries of contemporary creative and critical practice.
There are participating researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York; UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses; Washington State University; the University of Alberta and the Devonian Botanical Gardens, Edmonton; Concordia University; and Ryerson University, Toronto.
An innovative and aspect of this series of discussion is that it is the first jointly sponsored event between UBC Vancouver’s Green College and UBC’s Okanagan campus. UBC is committed to being at the forefront of digital media education through flexible learning initiatives and in support of emerging practices such as digital story telling.
“This bold venture benefits both campuses and provides UBC with an opportunity to extend knowledge throughout the wider community,” says Nancy Holmes, Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in FCCS. “We are really delighted about this initiative.”
“We are excited to be able to bring together scholars, artists and performers from the two UBC campuses and from outside the province like this, and hope that the series may open the way for other interdisciplinary collaborations in emergent areas of research and pedagogy,” says Mark Vessey, Principal of Green College.
Visiting researchers give a talk in Vancouver on Tuesday evenings, and then travel to deliver their presentation at UBC’s Okanagan campus on Wednesday afternoons.
The internationally acclaimed researchers will also work collaborators at two research centres on UBC’s Okanagan campus: The Centre for Culture and Technology and the Centre for Indigenous Media Arts.
All talks on the Okanagan campus take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Critical and Creative Studies Room 142. Here is a summary of topics and dates of Emerging Visions: Digital Media and Culture at the Okanagan campus:
