Engineering class shows off original designs for real-life problems

Student Design Showcase highlights creativity, ingenuity, and problem solving

What: Student Design Showcase
Who: First-year engineering students
When: Wednesday, April 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Engineering, Management and Education Building

First-year engineering students are showcasing their engineering skills and creations this Wednesday.  The event takes place Wednesday, April 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Richard S. Hallisey Atrium, EME Building, 1137 Alumni Avenue, UBC’s Okanagan campus.

The students have worked in teams throughout this academic term to develop their final projects, which are designed and constructed around three project themes:

  • Bus stop heater — Design an off-the-grid method for heating the bus stop on campus.
  • Community Recreational Initiatives Society (CRIS) Adaptive Adventures — Design a method to safely move a person from a wheelchair to a kayak.
  • Okanagan Science Centre — Design a prop that could be used by the Okanagan Science Centre during its annual Halloween fundraising event. The prop was required to have a science or engineering basis with both educational content and a “scare factor.”

Engineering teams of four to six students developed a conceptual design to solve these challenges, based on client interviews. The project required teams to develop and evaluate multiple designs and prepare a working computer-aided design model of the chosen concept. Their task involved building a physical model, and demonstrating it publicly with an oral presentation. The students also wrote a final engineering report that documents the design process and the final design.

Teams of judges representing industry sponsors Okanagan Science Centre, Community Recreation Initiative Society (CRIS), the City of Kelowna, and UBC, peer undergraduate students, UBC faculty, and graduate students will determine who wins the School of Engineering's prestigious Best Design and Best Presentation prizes.
