Author Ashley Little short-listed for Vancouver Book Award

Ashley Little

Ashley Little has been short-listed for the City of Vancouver Book Award 2014. Little, a double winner at the BC Book Prizes, is working on projects ranging from movie scripts to stage plays, a short story, and a fourth novel.

Another honour for UBC graduate student, dual winner in BC Book Prizes

Ashley Little, a graduate student of creative writing in UBC Okanagan’s Department of Creative Studies, has been short-listed for the City of Vancouver Book Award 2014 for her stark novel, Anatomy of a Girl Gang.

Set in the streets of Vancouver’s gritty Downtown East Side, Anatomy of a Girl Gang (Arsenal Pulp Press) follows the tragic exploits of a crew of deeply troubled teenagers.

An independent jury short-listed nominated titles and will select a winner. The $3,000 prize is funded by the City's Publishing Reserve, which was established in 1977 as a permanent legacy for Vancouver writers and publishers. The 26th annual City of Vancouver Book Award will be presented at the Mayor’s Arts Awards ceremony at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre on October 7, 2014.

The Vancouver Book Award nomination is the latest accolade for Little, who lives in Kelowna. She is notched an unprecedented dual win at last spring’s BC Book Prizes – with awards for books in different categories. Little took the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize for Anatomy of a Girl Gang, as well as the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize for her young-adult novel The New Normal, about troubled teenager Tamar Robinson.

Little is currently working on her fourth book. Her first novel, Prick, Confessions of a Tattoo Artist, has been optioned for a screenplay.

Along with BC author Garry Gottfriedson, Little will give a reading of her works on Wednesday, September 24, 7 p.m., at the Okanagan Regional Library, 1380 Ellis St., Kelowna, at UBC’s first Visiting Authors evening of the 2014-2015 season.
