The Urbanizing Okanagan

What: Free public symposium hosted by UBC Okanagan’s Urban Studies of the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences
When: Friday, March 11, 2016, from 9:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Where: UBC’s Okanagan Campus, multiple locations
Registration and schedule: urbanstudies.ok.ubc.ca

Kelowna is the fastest-growing city in Canada, according to Statistics Canada.

Faculty members from UBC Okanagan’s campus have teamed up with the Urban Land Institute of British Columbia to address the implications of this rapid growth.

A daylong symposium on March 11, open to the public, brings together speakers from UBC, the University of Victoria, and experts from the City of Kelowna, BC Housing, and the Urban Land Institute.

Highlights the day include:

  • Affordable Housing — Regional and International Perspectives
    Eric Li (UBC Okanagan), Sheryl Peters (BC Housing), Mark West (Urban Land Institute BC)
  • Attitudes Towards Urban Density in Kelowna
    Carey Doberstein and Ross Hickey (UBC Okanagan)
  • The Infill Challenge: Putting our Best House Forward
    James Moore (City of Kelowna)
  • Managing Growth: What Should Government Do and Not Do? Martin Farnham (University of Victoria)
  • A Prosperous Region Needs a Vibrant Core — Lessons from the Capital Region
    Elisabeth Gugl (University of Victoria)
  • Tuum Est/Nostrum Erit: A Wicked Problem Collaboration with a Local Urban Partner (Peachland)
    Thomas Heilke and Nicky Dhaliwal (UBC Okanagan)

The event is free, but registration is required by Friday, March 4 at: urbanstudies.ok.ubc.ca.
