National Chemistry Week is an annual, week-long celebration of the chemical sciences in all provinces and territories in Canada. It’s an opportunity for youth to get connected with the wonders of chemistry and for the not-so-young to appreciate chemistry through games, demonstrations, lectures, exhibitions and more.

What: Get to know your nose: The science of scent
Who: UBC Okanagan’s Chemistry department
When: Thursday, October 20, from 8 to 10 p.m.
Where: Muninn’s Post, 575 Bernard Avenue, Kelowna

Investigate the science of scent with UBC Okanagan chemistry professor Stephen McNeil. This workshop offers participants, ages 16 and up, a noses-on experience to explore different odours and learn about the molecular basis for your sense of smell.

What: Element of discovery
Who: UBC Okanagan’s Chemistry department
When: Saturday, October 22 from noon to 4 p.m.
Where: Fipke Centre for Innovative Research, 3247 University Way, Kelowna

Explore chemical phenomena with hands-on activities for chemists of all ages, five-years and up, with UBC Okanagan faculty and students. Watch a live demonstration featuring faculty superspies.

The events organized by UBC Okanagan’s Chemistry department are open to the public. A small participation fee covers material expenses.
