UBC Okanagan invites the community to the 2024 UBC Constitutional Lecture featuring Justice Bradley Miller of the Court of Appeal for Ontario. This lecture is a unique opportunity for local audiences to gain insight into the often complex and sometimes controversial world of constitutional interpretation in Canada.
Justice Miller, a respected constitutional scholar, will explore the nuances of how Canadian courts should approach interpreting the Constitution and the impact these interpretations have on the balance of power between the judiciary, Parliament and the executive.
He will also reflect on the relationship between constitutional law and morality. His lecture, Virtuous and Vicious Constitutional Interpretation, will challenge attendees to think critically about the role of courts in shaping the laws that govern everyday life.
“This lecture is a chance to hear from one of the most philosophically sophisticated and erudite members of the Canadian judiciary, on a topic that is especially relevant in today’s context, where constitutional controversies are increasingly prominent,” says Dr. Geoffrey Sigalet, Assistant Professor of Political Science at UBCO’s Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
“Justice Miller is also known for his dry sense of humour, so come prepared for wit and wisdom.”
Justice Miller’s experience as a jurist and an academic positions him well to speak on these issues. His lecture will appeal to anyone interested in the functioning of Canada’s legal system, the checks and balances that sustain it and how these mechanisms influence governance.
Following the lecture, there will be a Q&A session, giving attendees a chance to engage with Justice Miller on the critical issues he discusses.
This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required, but attendees are encouraged to arrive early as seating may be limited.
