Participants in UBCO’s upcoming creative studies open house will have a chance to explore studio spaces and have their portfolio reviewed and even pre-approved as part of their admission application to the program.

What: Creative and Portfolio Days open house at UBC Okanagan
Who: Prospective visual arts students
When: November 22 and January 10, noon to 2 pm
Where: Creative and Critical Studies Building, 1148 Research Road, UBC Okanagan

UBC Okanagan’s Department of Creative Studies is hosting two events in November and January for students planning on applying to the program.

The annual Portfolio and Creative Days give emerging and local artists a chance to have their portfolios reviewed and learn more about the Bachelor of Fine Arts program. The events include information sessions and studio tours, and give prospective students a chance to meet with UBCO visual arts faculty and current students.

The days are designed to help prospective students develop their artistic voices, explains Visual Arts Professor Briar Craig.

“Each Creative and Portfolio Day gives interested students a chance to experience our studio spaces firsthand, receive constructive feedback on their portfolios and gain valuable insight into how they can grow their creative potential through UBCO’s visual arts program,” he says.

Participants will tour studio classrooms and explore the working spaces used by visual arts and theatre students. They will also learn more about the UBC application process, portfolio requirements for the Bachelor of Fine Arts program and have the chance to ask questions.

“Receiving feedback on their work not only helps artists refine their portfolios, it also builds confidence and gives them a sense of belonging on campus,” says Visual Arts Lecturer Katherine Pickering. “We host these events so students can connect with faculty and peers, start building relationships and provide them with the encouragement they need to join our program.”

Each participant gets a 20-minute timeslot to present their work to the program coordinator and receive feedback on their portfolio before applying. Students with completed portfolios may receive early approval instead of waiting for the January 31 deadline.

Seats are limited for some of the sessions, and pre-registration is encouraged. To find out more and register, visit: fccs.ok.ubc.ca/creative-portfolio-days.
