UBC Okanagan’s Art on the Line is back and bigger than ever.
Now running for 24 years, the popular event, organized by students and faculty from the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, is a fundraiser in support of fine arts and media studies students, explains visual arts instructor David Doody.
“The evening features an impressive collection of various works for guests to explore and connect with,” says Doody. “As guests enjoy food and drinks, they have the chance to meet the artists and take part in the lottery-style selection of art, which makes the experience both interactive and exciting.”
What’s new this year is the location, as the event has moved to the second floor of UBCO’s Commons building.
“With its high ceilings, lots of open space and enormous windows, The Commons is the perfect place for this event,” says Doody.
Each ticket holder goes home with an original piece of art, donated by UBCO fine arts and media studies students, visual arts faculty and staff, alumni and local artists. As the evening begins, guests get to choose a piece they would like to take home, but nothing is guaranteed. The art they will actually take home isn’t revealed until their ticket is drawn as the evening progresses, explains Doody.
This year’s organizing committee includes Trinity Davis, Rain Doody, Averi Boerboom and Visual Arts Course Union President Stevie Poling. Organizing the event has been both educational and inspiring for the students.
“Being part of Art on the Line has been an incredible learning opportunity,” says Davis. “We’ve gained hands-on experience in curating, organizing and running a major event while building strong connections within the artistic community in Kelowna.”
Proceeds from the evening support UBCO visual arts and media studies students through activities such as the fourth-year show, the visiting artist program, travel grants and exhibitions. A portion of the proceeds will also go to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, which provides mental health services and counselling for youth in the Okanagan.
“We are so thankful for the incredible art contributed by students, faculty, staff, alumni and local artists,” adds Doody. “There are some truly outstanding pieces for people to take home.”
Art on the Line takes place on Saturday, March 14, at 6 pm in The Commons at UBC Okanagan. Tickets are $200 for two people, guaranteeing one piece of art. Guests who would like to attend and view the exhibition without participating in the artwork draw may attend with a $10 general admission fee.
“Each year, the students put in an incredible amount of work. Seeing it all come together for such a fun night with art lovers in the community is always an amazing experience,” says Doody. “It is truly a one-of-a-kind event that showcases so many bright minds.”
