UBCO Library’s Special Collections is hosting guest speakers who will demonstrate the art of letterpress-printing and binding books by hand.

What: Print the Okanagan
Who: Clare Thiessen and Jason Dewinetz, local operators of broke press and Greenboathouse Press
Where: Corbishley Reading Room inside UBC Okanagan Special Collections, The Commons, COM 004, 3297 University Way, UBC Okanagan
When: Saturday, March 21, from 2 to 4 pm

In the world of digital information, UBC Okanagan is hosting an event to prove that print is not dead.

UBC Okanagan Library and the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies present Print the Okanagan, an opportunity to hear from the owner-operators of two local literary-focused independent presses.

UBCO Library collects small and fine artisan outputs from independent printers and bookmakers across the Okanagan. This event is an opportunity to discover the diverse local printing and book arts scene, and meet some of the creators behind the special collections, says organizer Alex Liu.

At Print the Okanagan, Clare Thiessen of broke press and Jason Dewinetz of Greenboathouse Press will share how they create their printed work.

Thiessen has been running broke press since 2019, publishing chapbooks and poetry zines by emerging and established Canadian writers. Dewinetz operates Greenboathouse Press, which produces hand-bound limited editions printed by letterpress using hand-set metal type. Both are writers who publish work from local writers and those across the country.

They will describe tools and methods they use to create books, from digital design and printing to metal type-casting, letterpress printing and hand-binding. They will also bring select works from their presses for participants to peruse.

A variety of chapbooks printed by broke press will be on sale at the event, along with risograph-printed limited-edition collectible memorabilia printed by a new not-for-profit fine art press operated by UBCO’s Department of Creative Studies.

Print the Okanagan takes place Saturday, March 21, from 2 to 4 pm in the Corbishley Reading Room within UBCO’s Special Collections in the lower level of The Commons. Space is limited, and people can also participate via Zoom.
