UBC Okanagan Heat 1 Thompson Rivers U Wolfpack 1

Game Recap: The Heat stepped onto the pitch this afternoon in Kamloops for the second game in the home and home series versus the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack. TRU currently sits on top of the league two points ahead of UBC Okanagan and is ranked 4th nationally in the CCAA. The Heat started out strong moving the ball well and pressuring the Wolfpack defence. Alexa Kennedy notched her league leading 8th that placed the Heat on the scoreboard first by heading in a well placed cross from Jennifer Kidd at the 15 minute mark. The Heat continued to press for yet it was TRU that broke through the Heat’s back line forcing keeper Sabrina Gasparac to make a challenge which resulted in a penalty kick. The Wolfpack capitalized on the opportunity and tied the game up in the 35th minute.
The second half TRU came out battling and created several goal scoring chances that were turned away by the Heat goalkeeper and speedy center back Hayley Uyeyama. The Heat defended 6 corners and dug in to prevent the go ahead goal. At the end of the match the game remained tied 1-1.
“We were finally able to play a full 90 minutes of competitive soccer against a strong team. This weekend definitely proved for us that we can play with any team in this league and be successful” co captain Emma Nixon
“I am very proud of the team’s efforts this weekend. Any time you can take points off the top team is fantastic. Now our focus is to finish out the season strong working hard to secure a playoff spot.” Added Coach Claire Paterson.
Next weekend, the Heat trek to Prince George to try and declaw the UNBC Timberwolves, both the men’s and women’s match begin at 12noon.
