UBC Okanagan Heat: 2 Capilano University Blues: 1
UBC Okanagan Goal Scorers- Alexa Kennedy (82nd min); Emma Nixon(14th min Extra Time)
he UBC Okanagan Women continued their quest for a provincial medal as they squeaked by the Capilano University Blues 2 – 1 in extra time.
The game saw many missed opportunities for both teams until Alexa Kennedy broke through and scored in the 82nd minute to give the Heat a 1-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to play. The lead was short lived however as Capilano was able to answer in the 87th minute and send the game into extra time at 1-1.
It took 14 minutes of overtime before Emma Nixon was able to shake free and net the winning goal for the UBC Okanagan Heat.
“it was an exciting game definitely one for the fans with the end to end action. We moved the ball around and hand much of the possession but it took us a while to get on the score sheet. Sabrina had an outstanding game in net make a couple of very big saves to keep the score even and first year midfielder Amanda Fehr was our stand out player winning the ball in the air and controlling the center of the park. The two timely goals scored by our strikers Emma Nixon and Alex kenndy were well worked in by the team.” commented Claire Paterson and “it would have been nice to get it done in regulation time but I am thrilled that we are now in the position to be playing for a medal.”
The Heat now face defending nationals champion, Langara College, in the semi-final Saturday at 11:00am. In their only meeting this year Langara was able to come from behind to snip the Heat 2-1 in Kelowna.
Gametime: Saturday Oct. 24 @ 11:00am
