Second year Power Hitter Myrte Schon is a familiar face to many of the current Heat players, one they’re used to seeing on the other side of the net. Schon is transferring from Abbotsford’s Columbia Bible College after a year of starring for the fifth-place Bearcats where she finished first in the league in Aces. The 5’11 Hitter also finished among the league leaders in Kills and Digs. Following her stand-out season Schon was elected to the BCCAA All-Rookie team. With such credentials, she’s expected to be an immediate impact player for the Heat.
Schon joins the Heat after a stellar high school career at Langley Christian where she was named Senior Female Athlete of the Year. She also played for the Team B.C. 18-under team and for the Provincial Champion Fraser Valley Blitz.
When asked why she chose to transfer to UBC, Schon replied “I chose UBC Okanagan because I wanted a change... I have heard only good things about both the classes and the campus at UBC Okanagan.”
When asked how she feels about joining the Heat, she replied “I'm really excited to be part of the team. I think that I'll fit right in with the girls and the coaches, and I’m sure I will love the time that I get to spend with them both on and off the court. The girls that I have met were really friendly and made me feel welcome right away. I'm pumped to see how the season turns out.”
Her presence will also be greatly welcomed by the Heat who will be without All-Star Outside Hitter Leigh Dreher who graduated this past spring. Coach Steve Manuel feels positive about having Schon join his team saying “She is a complete player that will make us better right away. We are very excited to have her join us.”
Schon who is “intrigued by the human body,” will be joining the UBC Human Kinetics program looking to major in clinical exercise physiology with a potential minor in Psychology. She will attempt to parlay this degree into a career in physiotherapy. In the meantime, her talented play will help the Heat to build momentum before joining the CIS for the 2011-2012 season.
