Heat kick off 2010 exhibition schedule with trip to Coast

The UBC Okanagan Heat men’s soccer team made the trek to Vancouver this weekend with an opportunity to play a couple of exhibition games versus the UBC Thunderbirds and a North Vancouver Metro league all star team.

The Heat’s first taste of action came against the Thunderbird’s on Saturday night, UBC placed first in the ultra competitive Canada West league last season.  The Heat fell 4 – 1 to the Thunderbirds, yet the Heat coaches thought they fought well as the Thunderbirds played their starters for a good portion of the game. Thomas Simkins scored the Heat’s only goal on a penalty kick in the 60th minute.

On Sunday’s game the Heat took down a Men’s league all star team from North Vancouver 1 – 0. The game winning goal was scored by in the 70th minute as second year Kelowna Secondary product Shane Mudaliar found the back of the net as a throw in by Greg Karogiannis was placed on Shane’s foot. Spencer Brown played the full 90 minutes without allowing a goal to preserve the win.

The Heat will head to Tacoma Washington this upcoming weekend to play three US schools in three days. On Friday night the Heat will battle the University of St. Martin’s in Tacoma, Saturday the Heat will lock horns with the University of the Puget Sound. Sunday morning UBC Okanagan will do battle versus Pacific Lutheran University before heading home. This trip should be a good chance for the team to play and see some good soccer as they will also take in the Seattle Sounders match versus the Chicago Fire of the MLS Soccer league on Saturday night.

The Heat’s first home games will be Saturday September 18 women at 1:00pm men at 3:00pm as they host the Quest University Kermodes.
