The UBC Okanagan Heat defended their home turf today as they faced off against the visiting Quest University Kermodes, coming away with a 4-0 victory and starting the season with 3 straight victories. The Kermodes came out strong tallying the first few shots of the game and pressed their advantage by controlling the possession in the middle of the pitch. The Heat responded by using the set piece to create several goal scoring opportunities yet for the first 44 minutes neither team was able to hit the scoreboard. Just before the half when Emma Nixon showed back into the midfield collecting the ball and slotted it through to her striker partner Alexa Kennedy who hammered the ball home. At the half UBC Okanagan Heat up 1-0.
In the second half UBC Okanagan continued to turn up the heat and really began to dominate possession. ‘Lex notched her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute assisted by Emily Braun as she slotted the ball past the Quest keeper showing great composure on the ball. The Heat fire power continued when freshman Marissa Klees cracked a 25 yard shot beating the Kermodes keeper in the 80th minute and Emily Braun continued her goal a game pace with another tally in the 84 minute with a terrific left footed strike from the top of the 18 yard box. At the final whistle it was 4-0 Heat with keeper Sabrina Gasparac earning her second shut out of the season.
Claire Paterson was happy with today saying, “It was a good win today we stepped up our play in the second half and we were awarded for our efforts. We had 4 great goals and could have had a couple more. It has been a great start to the season.”
With 2 goals today Alexa Kennedy added, “Quest came out strong in the first half and it took us a while to get our game together but we were able to break through. Once we were able to play our game and control the match we opened up the 4-0 lead.”
Tomorrow the Heat host the Vancouver Island University Mariners women at 11:00am men at 1:00pm. The women’s match up features two 3 win 0 loss teams while the men’s team looks for their first win against an undefeated Mariner’s squad.
