After posting the first unbeaten regular season in school history, the UBC Okanagan women’s soccer team will be looking for another first this weekend—a B.C. Colleges Athletics Association title.

The Heat is at Kwantlen College in Surrey for the 2010 provincial championship.

By virtue of their first-place finish in Group A of the BCCAA (10-0-2), UBCO has a bye into Saturday’s semifinal round.

The Heat will face the winner of the Thompson Rivers-Langara Falcons. The VIU Mariners, first place in Group B, will meet the winner of Friday’s game between Quest and Kwantlen.

Based on their regular season, the Heat has to be considered a favourite at provincials.

That said, the UBCO women are trying to remain grounded heading into the weekend.

“We are cautiously confident as we know that we need to ensure each time we step out onto the field that we are putting forward our best effort and playing our game to the highest level possible,” said head coach, Claire Paterson.

“Last year an undefeated team lost their first game in the gold medal match. We keep that in mind and will do everything we can to be successful.”

The semi winners will square off in Sunday’s championship game.

The Heat capped off an unbeaten 2010 regular season last weekend with two more dominant performances on their home turf.

On Saturday, Alex Kennedy scored her league-leading 11th and 12th goals of the season as UBCO beat Kwantlen 3-0 to clinch first place in Group A.

Holly Wollmann scored the other goal.

On Sunday, Kennedy notched her 13th and Emma Nixon also scored in a 2-0 shutout of Douglas. Keeper Sabrina Gasparic capped a superb regular season with two more shutouts for a total of nine on the season.

Heat men

The UBCO men closed out the 2010 BCCAA season with a 2-9-1 record after splitting their final two games at home.

On Saturday, Shane Mudalair scored twice and Thomas Simkins added a single in a 3-0 win over Kwantlen.

On Sunday, Douglas edged the Heat 3-2.

Lars Seitzinger and Mudaliar scored for UBCO.
