After an extremely strenuous CIS pre season exhibition schedule, the Heat finally took the court against some BCCAA competition winning both Friday and Saturday in straight sets. “This was a big adjustment for us, coming back to this style of play after almost two months of Canada West exhibition. All of our pre season competition was against Canada West teams where the speed and pace of the game is quite different. I thought we adapted well and overall we played well” added head coach Steve Manuel.
On Friday against CBC, there were some great individual efforts on the court. Most notable was CBC transfer Myrte Schön who led the heat with 16 points against her former team. 3rd year Penticton standout middle blocker Kaylan Gouldsborough was all but unstoppable in the middle with 10 kills. Another newcomer, Castlegar’s Kendra Wayling (2nd year, Mt Sentinel Secondary) did a nice job of stepping in and was our top defender with 9 digs.
Saturday’s matchup against the UFV Cascades a young and dynamic team that played a very aggressive match and proved to be a handful for the Heat. Heat setter Caitlin Nyhus (5th Year, Penticton Secondary) did a great job of spreading out the offence with five of her hitters having between 5 and 10 kills. Nyhus also led the Heat on defence with 8 digs and had this to say about the start of the season. “We saw again over the course of this weekend how tough teams will play against us. Both CBC and UFV just kept playing hard, no matter what the score was and they worked hard for every point. We need to be the team that works harder than everyone else, that’s how we won our two national championships and that’s what we have to do to win a third.”
The Heat have their home opener and Banner Raising Ceremony this Friday, November 5th against the Capilano Blues. Match time is 6:00 pm.
