The men’s basketball season ended tonight as the Heat fell to the Douglas College Royals 103-86 in a win or go home quarter final game at Columbia Place in Abbotsford Thursday night. Alex Roth was named the Player of the game for the Heat as he led the team in scoring with 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.
With the loss the season has set on the Heat as well as ends their stay in the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association as the team will now look to prepare for their sojourn in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association.
The game started just the way the Heat planed with good ball movement and an Iain Con hitting a three from the corner, and that was probably the last time anything went the Heat’s way. The Royals and the Heat both traded hoops for most of the first quarter as the Heat took that frame 23-22. The Heat’s shots topped falling in the second quarter as they only managed 9 points that frame while the Royals offense really started to roll as Douglas’ first team all-star, Drew Slaght banked a long three to end the half and push the Douglas lead to 14, 46-32 was the score at the break. The Heat shot an abysmal 34% from the field and even worse form the three point line going 4/14.
The third quarter the Heat tried to get back in the game but could not stop the Royals backcourt combination of Drew Slaght and Kadeem Scott as those two were a matchup nightmare for the Heat all game long.
The Heat were never able to make up the ground as Douglas College continued to handle the Heat’s pressure and the Royal’s won the game 103-86. The leading scorers for the Heat other than Roth were Iain Con with 13 points and Dan Briscoe contributed 12. Steve Morrison led the team in rebounding with 10.
