In what was a very exciting game this afternoon the UBC Okanagan Heat dispatched the Vancouver Island University Mariners with a 61-57 point victory as they well now move into the BCCAA provincial final Saturday night.
The Heat were led by their veteran players as fifth year player Jenna Kantz and third year guard Madison Kaneda each scored 15 points to lead the Heat. Third year post and second team All-Star Ros Huber was named the Heats player of the game with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 8 steals. The game was very tight for the full 40 minutes with 10 lead changes and 5 ties, the Heat had the largest lead of the game at the end of the third quarter with a 9 point lead 48-39. The Mariners climbed back in the game and grabbed the lead 57-56 with 3:13 in the game, the Heat scored the next 5 points while holding the Mariners scoreless over those three minutes to advance to the gold medal game.
Coach Heather Semeniuk was very pleased with the effort and execution of her team saying ”The girls were really ready to compete for the game this afternoon and their composure was outstanding. We had lost to the Mariners three times this year and being able to maintain composure throughout the entire 40 minutes was a big factor in us coming away with a victory.”
The Heat will play the first place Capilano Blues Saturday night at 6:00pm for the BCCAA Provincial Gold medal at Columbia Place in Abbotsford you can watch the game on the internet at www.sportscanada.tv. The winner of the game will go on the National Championships March 17-19 at Niagara College in Ontario as the BC representative.
