The UBC Okanagan Heat wrapped up the 45th Annual Wesmen Classic with a 81-50 loss to the host Winnipeg Wesmen Friday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre to finish fifth in the eight team tournament.
The Heat’s backcourt once again provided the offense as first year guard Bret Macdonald (Port Coquitlam, BC) led the Heat with 13 points; his backcourt mate Yassine Ghomari (3rd year, Vancouver, BC) added 11 points, five assists.
Mark McNee led the Wesmen with a game high 21 points and nine rebounds. McNee was named Player of the Game for his performance. Travis Krahn added 14 points, including three-three pointers. Third year forward Brayden Duff added 12 points and fifth year guard James Horaska playing in his final Classic finished with 10.
The Heat jumped ahead 13-1 at the midway point of the first quarter but Winnipeg found their legs in the final four minutes to trail 17-16 after one. The Wesmen continued to ride the momentum in the second quarter outscoring the Heat 23-11 to lead 39-28 at halftime. Winnipeg continued to put pressure on the Heat in the second half, doubling the Heat’s offensive output in the final twenty minutes.
Winnipeg finishes the Classic with a record of 2-1. The Heat finish the tournament with a record of 1-2. The Heat will next play at home Friday Jan. 6 versus the Manitoba Bisons at 8 p.m., Saturday at 8 p.m. versus the Heat will host the Winnipeg Wesmen.
