Sport BC honoured the best of BC’s sport community March 8th at the River Rock Show Theatre at Sport BC’s 46th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards, presented by TELUS. Athletes, coaches, and officials from across the province were recognized with awards from 17 distinct categories, celebrating the recipients’ achievements over the past year and their dedication to sport.
Heat Men's Volleyball 5th year setter Preston Tucker (Vernon, BC) won the College Athlete of the Year, presented by KidSport. "I feel honoured even to be nominated for such an award let alone winning it," commented Tucker. "This award feels really special because it comes in my final year with the Heat. There are so many people that helped me along the way including teammates, coaches, and most importantly friends and family."
Tucker's candidacy for the award was highlighted by the following impressive achievements during the 2010/2011 season:
- CCAA National Player of the Year Across All Sports
- CCAA National All-Canadian
- BCCAA Player of the Year
- BCCAA 1st Team All-Star
- UBC Okanagan Student-Athlete of the Year
He has also played on a number of BC Provincial Volleyball Teams, most notably during the summer of 2009 when he represented BC in Charlottetown at the Canada Summer Games.
This is the second year in a row that UBC Okanagan has been the recipient of this award. Last year Alex Basso took home the prestigious award.
