Sophomore season in Canada West for Heat volleyballers.
The 2012-13 Canada West volleyball schedules were unveiled Tuesday morning and the UBC Okanagan volleyball teams will open the season against Interior rival, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack in a home and home series, Friday October 26 in Kamloops with the Heat home opener on Saturday night.
The following weekend (November 2-3) UBC Okanagan will play host to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, as with all Canada West home games at UBC Okanagan the Heat will host at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Fridays and at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, both days will have the women take the court preceding the men’s team.
UBC Okanagan will be on the road against the newest member of the Canada West Volleyball Conference, the Mount Royal Cougars (November 9-10). The team will continue alternating home and away weekends until the end of the semester, playing Manitoba (November 16-17) at home, on the road versus the University of Alberta (November 24-25), and then at home versus the Trinity Western Spartans to close out the semester with a Saturday-Sunday tilt (December 1-2).
The second half of the season has the Heat only at UBC’s Okanagan campus twice. The Heat open 2013 on the road versus the Regina Cougars (January 12-13), the other road games include a battle in Vancouver versus the UBC Thunderbirds (January 25-26) and then the Heat take on the University of Winnipeg (February 1-2). This will be the UBC Okanagan volleyball teams first ever matchup versus the Thunderbirds in Vancouver in the campus versus campus battle.
The team only hosts twice in the second half, the University of Calgary Dinos will play in Kelowna January 18-19, and then the volleyball regular season will close when the Heat play host to the University of Brandon Bobcats February 8-9.
The playoffs feature the top seven in both men's and women's play at the end of the 22-match regular season schedule on February 9th. While the top school on each side of the ledger receives a bye to the conference Final Four as host of the event, the remaining six play a best-of-three elimination format to determine the other finalists, February 15-17. The Final Four semis go February 22nd and the medal matches on February 23rd.
Sherbrooke University is hosting the CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship February 28 to March 2, while Laval hosts the men’s championship March 1-3.
