Nonis Sports Field, Kelowna, B.C.
UBC Okanagan Heat (0-1-0) versus the Kwantlen Eagles (1-0-0)
1st 2nd Final
In the opening weekend of PACWEST soccer action, the Heat were unable to defend their home turf as Kathleen Gratz and Dominique Lang of the Kwantlen Eagles scored a goal apiece for their team, lifting the Eagles over the UBC Okanagan Heat at Nonis Field. Kwantlen begins the PACWEST season at 1-0, while the Heat begin the season in the hole at 0-1.
“We came out flat and underperformed today,” reflected Heat Coach Claire Paterson. “Kwantlen did a good job at winning the ball, moving the ball quickly, and we just seemed to lose the battles there.”
The goal resulted from a scramble involving numerous players, including Heat GK Sabrina Gasparac. With Sabrina lost in the scramble, the ball trickled out to Gratz, who buried the shot from five yards out.
The Heat were unable to mount a serious attack, with the only significant scoring chance coming in the 45th minute by Lindsey Briggs.
Paterson has high hopes for Sunday’s matchup. “I expect our girls will come out flying tomorrow, to show not only themselves but our fans exactly how we can play.”
The Heat will host the Douglas College Royals at Nonis Field on Sunday, while Kwantlen College will travel to Thompson Rivers University to face the Wolfpack. Both games are scheduled for 12 p.m.
