COQUITLAM, BC – An early goal by forward Kirsten Dodds (2nd year, Vernon, BC), just six minutes into the contest, gave UBC Okanagan all the offense they would need Sunday afternoon at Town Centre Park in Coquitlam. The Heat won their second game in a row, besting the hometown Royals 4-0.
Sunday’s game didn’t follow the same script as many have this year, where the Heat would need to play flawless defensively just to squeak out a win or play to a draw. UBC Okanagan scored early and scored often, achieving a season high four goals versus the Royals.
“The four goals that we scored today were quality and we had numerous other chances,” Heat head coach Claire Paterson reflected. “We are starting to get the bounces which is nice,” she added, referencing the numerous chances her team has had in the previous weeks, only to come away empty handed due to a cross bar or a brilliant save.
In the sixth minute of the first half Dodds put in a header, her third goal on the year, and at the 34th minute Penticton native Madeleine Greig put the Heat up two with her first goal of the season when she nicked the ball past the Douglas keeper.
The Heat added a third goal when Alana Hazell, a first year midfielder out of Kelowna Secondary, notched her second on the year early in the first half, and Mairi Horth (1st year, Ladysmith, BC) knocked in her second of the year in the 70th minute to close out the scoring.
Paterson has her team heading in the right direction as the season winds down and is happy with where the team is at. “We played really well today [Sunday] as a team and got back to the way I know we can play.”
Saturday the team shutout out the Eagles with Christine Tallon in goal, and on Sunday senior keeper Sabrina Gasparac played the full 90 minutes for the clean sheet, her first on the year and that now gives her 17.5 shutouts in her UBC Okanagan career.
Gasparac, the co-captain, was in good spirits following the match and had this to say about the team’s weekend: “We definitely stepped it up this weekend and expected not only effort but quality out of each other. Voila, six points.”
With only four games left to play the Heat’s record is four wins, one loss, and five draws and puts them in a good position to lock up one of the four playoff spots in the next two weekends of league play.
The last four games for the Heat are in Kelowna; two games this upcoming weekend, Oct 13-14 and then the final two matches the following weekend, Oct 20-21. The Heat will host Langara College (5W-3L-1T before Sundays game), Saturday, Oct 13 (1 p.m.) and then Quest University (4W-4L-2T), Saturday, Oct 14 (12 p.m.). All games to be played at the Nonis Sports Field, on UBC’s Okanagan campus.
