KELOWNA, B.C. - A strong team effort led the Heat to their first victory of the season Saturday night, as UBC Okanagan bullied the Mount Royal Cougars en route to a 78-64 victory.

Helping to build an early Heat lead was Madison Kaneda (5th year, Vernon, BC), who scored 12 of her 20 points in the first quarter. Sarah Allison (2nd year, Surrey, BC) supplied 14 points over the course of the game, while Krystal Schouten (3rd year, Winnipeg, MB) added 7 points and 7 boards for the Heat. A 28-18 fourth quarter ensured the game was out of reach for the Cougars.

“We came out more as a team tonight compared to our game yesterday,” commented captain Roslyn Huber (5th year, Kelowna, BC). “We got the stops which led to great chances on offense.”

After being outrebounded by 17 in Friday night’s game, the Heat were extremely active on the boards, outrebounding the Cougars 49-34.

“It’s the workhorse stuff that helps you win games,” added head coach Heather Semeniuk. “I’m just really pleased at the way the girls came out with more purpose and attention tonight.”

Learning a valuable lesson from Friday night’s game, the Heat showed a lot of maturity in coming back strong Saturday’s game to earn a weekend split versus Mount Royal.

“It’s good to see them come back, to restore the confidence and faith in themselves,” concluded Semeniuk.

With the win, the Heat move to 1-3 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 1-3.

The Heat will travel to Prince George next weekend, Nov. 16th and 17th, to face off against the UNBC Timberwolves. Friday night’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
