The Capilano Blues lope into town tonight in an attempt to usurp the hometown Heat for 3rd place in the BCCAA standings. Both UBC O Heat and Capilano Blues men's and women's teams sit in 3rd and 4th place respectively, so there is nothing Capilano would like more than to leap-frog the home squad.
With last weekend's 20-point loss to UNBC still fresh in their memory, the Heat women (10-2) take the floor in an attempt to make up some ground against the T'Wolves and Vancouver Island Mariners. Third place is unfamiliar territory for a Heat team that has been in the top spot for most of the season prior to last weekend's upset, and a couple losses at the hands of the Blues (9-3) would push them even further down the chart. But don't expect Coach Heather "Sem" Semeniuk's team to go down easily. Their full court press has become notorious in the league, causing nightmares for slower teams.
The Heat men have been involved in some tight games the past two weekends, with an amazing game against Douglas College on January 24th that required clutch 3-pointers by Dave Joseph in the 4th quarter and Ryan Fahandeg in OT to give the Heat the win. They were not so fortunate last weekend, as they suffered a 92-89 loss at the hands of the T'Wolves who are currently ranked 2nd in the entire CCAA.
The Heat's Simon Pelland knows the Blues well having played with five of their players in high school. He had this to say about the team's potency:
"They're a very streaky team. They have a strong scorer, Mac Fairburn, who we have to control, and make sure no one else heats up."
The Heat women are currently ranked 11th in the CCAA, while the men reside at 15th. A couple wins against a solid Capilano team could help both teams ascend the national rankings, so lets make some noise to cheer them on!
