Seven UBC Okanagan Heat student-athletes have placed among the 130 across the nation that have combined excellence in collegiate athletics and academics. For a second straight year Cody Bell from the Heat’s golf program and Hayley Carlson, a Heat women’s soccer player, are among the recipients of Academic All-Canadians. The other five recipients are: Alana Kent (Women's golf), Jennifer Kidd and Christine Tallon (Women's Soccer), Austin Jones and David Yesaya (Men's Soccer).
Cody Bell (Salmon Arm, BC), in his second season with the golf team, was once again a Provincial All-Star and earned a trip to the national championship, where he placed tenth - he is in the Faculty of Management. Alana Kent (Calgary, AB) finished her final year of golf with a national championship and will graduate this spring with a degree in Physics.
Hayley Carlson (Red Deer, AB) is a second year defender for the Heat and provincial all-star; she also excels as a second year nursing student. Jennifer Kidd (Richmond, BC) is in her fourth year for the Heat as a defender for the women's soccer team and all four years she has been named a provincial all-star; Jen is also achieving top marks in the Human Kinetics program at UBC. Christine Tallon is in her third year of eligibility but first as a member of the Heat. She proved to be a wall between the pipes for her squad earning a provincial all-star while produce top grades a Bachelor of Arts student.
Austin Jones, a midfielder from Vernon, BC earned a provincial all-star award for his efforts on the pitch for the Heat men’s soccer team; he also displayed a high level of achievement in the Faculty of Management. David Yesaya (North York, ON), also earned all-star status for the men’s soccer team, achieved academic honours in his third year of his Arts degree at UBC.
The UBC Okanagan Heat Soccer and Golf teams compete in the CCAA and thus are the only teams with student-athletes eligible for this award.

March 25 2013 - SIRC (Sport Information Resource Centre) and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) are proud to announce the 2012-2013 SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Award recipients.
This year, 130 student-athletes have achieved combined excellence in collegiate athletics and academics.
“The student-athletes who have achieved excellence in both athletics and academics are role models for the youth of today and destined to excel in their future careers,” says Debra Gassewitz, SIRC president and CEO. “SIRC is honoured to recognize these outstanding individuals as recipients of the SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian award.”
The SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian award is the CCAA’s most prestigious student-athlete honour, epitomizing both organizations’ commitment to academic success and athletic achievement. Honourees must attain academic honours at their institution in addition to obtaining one of the following athletic achievements: named to their member conference All-Star Team (first or second) in soccer, volleyball, basketball or curling; earn a gold or silver medal at their member conference badminton championship; finish among the top seven men or women as well as finishing in the top third at their member conference cross-country running championship; or finish among the top three women or top five men as well as finishing in the top third at their member conference golf championship.
“The CCAA is proud to recognize and celebrate those student-athletes who’ve attained the highest possible CCAA honour in their pursuit of academic and athletic excellence,” states Sandra Murray-MacDonell, CCAA Executive Director.
The SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Recognition Award is also presented each year to the institution with the most student-athlete award recipients. This year, SIRC and the CCAA are pleased to present the award to Vancouver Island University which had a total of eight recipients combining academic and athletic excellence.
