On Thursday (May 9-2013) of this week at the Canada West AGM in Canmore, AB, the decision will be made by the existing thirteen full-member Canada West schools on the UBC Okanagan Heat’s application and whether the university will receive full member status.
The UBC Okanagan Heat and its men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s volleyball teams have been playing as probationary members for the past two seasons after having achieved a positive vote at the Canada West AGM in May of 2010.
On May 9th the UBC Okanagan Heat will need a vote in the affirmative of at least 75 percent of the votes cast to confirm full status, and if the Heat are fortunate to receive ¾ of the vote they look forward to removing the ‘probationary’ descriptor and becoming a full member of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA), according to Ron Johnson director of athletics at UBC’s Okanagan campus.
In the three years that the Heat were probationary members they were able to meet or exceed all expectations Canada West had placed on them during the probation.
The next and final hurdle for the Heat and their membership will be acceptance into Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), that vote will take place at their AGM from June 4-7 in Toronto, ON.
