Two student athletes that are set to suit up for the UBC Okanagan Heat this fall, Lars Bornemann and Claire Elliott, have been selected as part of The Province newspaper’s 14th annual Head of the Class special section.
The selections mark the third straight year that UBC Okanagan has had an athlete selected as part of Head of the Class, which aims to honour the best and brightest graduating student-athletes in our province.
Lars had an exceptional career at Oak Bay in Victoria, and the 6-3 left-side will join Greg Poitras’ young Heat men’s volleyball squad in hopes to send the team back into the post-season while working towards a degree in Engineering at UBC’s Okanagan campus.
"It was an extreme pleasure getting the opportunity to write about Lars this season," said Province high school and university sports writer Howard Tsumura of his newspapers 2012-13 boys’ volleyball Player of the Year. "Not only was he the most dominant boys player in the province, his love of the classroom shone through every time we spoke, and his pursuit of a mechanical engineering degree is proof of that. Prediction here: He will be a CIS academic all-Canadian before his career in Kelowna is finished."
Claire Elliott at 5-foot 7 will run the point for Heather Semeniuk’s UBC Okanagan Heat women’s basketball team, Claire has already been accepted into the nursing program at UBC’s Okanagan campus where she hopes to become a registered nurse and later receive a master’s degree in the nursing faculty. Claire will nurse the Heat’s offense to new heights while completing her schooling in Kelowna.
"The best thing about watching Claire Elliott play basketball for the Argyle Pipers this season, was getting an affirmation that the sum of all the little things on the court really do add up to a whole lot," said Tsumura. "From tips, deflections, steal, rebounds that triggered fast breaks, and all of the plays you'd put on a hustle board, Claire really embodied working hard on the floor, and I look forward to following her university basketball career."
