KELOWNA, BC – For the second time in two games, Michelle Smith (3rd year, Vernon, BC) got the Heat on the board first, and her goal would stand as the game winner as the Heat defeated the visiting Capilano Blues 2-0 Sunday at Nonis Sports Field.
After a huge save by Blues goalkeeper Ariel Anderson (3rd year, Burnaby, BC) in the 60th minute, a mad scramble formed in front of the Capilano net in search of the rebound. A frantic Anderson was helplessly bowled over in the chaos, leaving the net wide open for Smith. She put a light touch on the ball, and it sailed over the flattened Anderson for the Heat's first goal.
Taylor Sarchet (5th year, Surrey, BC) provided the insurance goal for the Heat in the 70th minute. Her blast from twenty yards out wrapped around the right post of the Capilano goal to put an exclamation mark on a match dominated by the Heat. In the end, the Heat's relentless offensive attack led to fourteen shots on goal, while the Blues were only able to muster three.
"It was a really good game overall," said Heat head coach Claire Paterson following the game. "I thought the team played really well together and created tons of chances."
Player of the Game, Lindsey Briggs (4th year, Delta, BC), was behind most of the Heat's chances on the day. Numerous times she created great opportunities for her teammates, keeping the pressure on the Blues defense.
"I'm really, really happy with how our team came together for each other and how we fought to defend our home turf," finished Paterson.
The Heat will begin what will be three weekends of play on the road next weekend, travelling to Surrey, BC to face the Kwantlen Eagles on Saturday, September 14th and then to Coquitlam, BC to face Douglas College on Sunday, September 15th.
