SURREY, B.C. - After shutting out the Capilano Blues to close out opening weekend last Sunday, the Heat men’s soccer headed down to Surrey in search for another win Saturday afternoon against the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles. A physical game would ensue with neither team able to get a lot of quality chances at the net, culminating in a scoreless result.
“It was just one of those away games,” Heat coach Dante Zanatta commented after the match. “We created chances and didn’t finish them. They defended quite well.”
Third-year defender Harrison Shrimpton (Whistler, BC) was the Heat Man of the Match, pestering the Eagles offense away from keeper Logan Ellis (2nd year, Calgary, AB), making his job a little easier for the match.
The team’s best chance was a Giovanni Carida (1st year, Coquitlam, BC) open look in the second half that just hit the post. Scoring opportunities were rare the rest of the match for either team. “It was a bit more of a battle game than a nice passing game,” Zanatta said, adding that the pitch was quite small, which would leave less room for maneuvering for either team.
Zanatta was pleased with the work his team put in, and praised the men’s ability to maintain possession on the offensive end “about 60%” of the game.
With the draw the Heat’s record moves to (1W-1L-1T), and the Eagles are still winless at (0W-1L-2T).
The Heat will wrap up their weekend Sunday when they visit the Douglas College Royals. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at Coquitlam Towncentre.
