Third year forward Kirsten Dodds, the leading UBC Okanagan goal scorer in 2012, had been held goalless heading into week four of the 2013 PACWEST season. In the past two games, her teammates had also been shutout, dropping both decisions. It came as no surprise that when Dodds broke out this weekend. Dodds netted three goals in two road games to help the Heat earn six-points much need points.
Saturday, on a wet and rainy afternoon in Nanaimo, the UBC Okanagan squad had a decisive 4-0 win over VIU in a wet Nanamio. Dodds goal was a grinder’s goal as she followed a shot by her teammate. Pouncing on the rebound before the VIU keeper and defender could clear it off the line, Dodds and the ball found themselves in the net.
On Sunday afternoon, the Heat had a date with the Capilano Blues. Under less than ideal and extremely soggy field conditions, Vernon’s Kirsten Dodds scored 2 important and needed goals as UBC Okanagan defeated Capilano 2-0. The last time the Blues lost to UBC Okanagan on home soil was in 2010. Dodds first goal came in at the 57th minute as she took on a Blues defender on the wing one-on-one. Having slipping past the Defender, Dodds slotted a pass to her teammate Smith whose shot produced a rebound. That rebound came straight back to Dodds and she clinically finished it. Her second goal on the day and third on the weekend was the result of a slick bit of passing for the Heat that sprung Dodds on a breakaway. In the sloppy conditions, Dodds made a great move to freeze the Capilano keeper and buried the ball past her, to cement the Heat’s 2-0 road victory.
The Heat will play their final road game of the year with a match against nemesis and Interior rival, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. TRU is once again at the top of the standings with a 7-0-1 record. The teams will play a home and away, Saturday in Kamloops and Sunday in Kelowna.
