Women’s Soccer – The Heat return to the post-season for the fifth-straight year this weekend, heading into the 2013 PACWEST Provincial Soccer Championships as the third-seed after a 7W-3L-4D season. Hosted by Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC, the 2013 PACWEST Provincial Soccer Championships is a two-day, single elimination tournament that will feature two semi-final matchups Saturday, with the Gold Medal game being held on Sunday. The first semi-final game of the tournament will feature the 2012 PACWEST Silver Medalists in the Heat versus the second-seed Quest Kermodes.
There will be a familiar feel to the semi-final, as the Heat and Kermodes both concluded the 2013 PACWEST regular season against one another in a game that resulted in a feel-each-other-out 0-0 draw. With playoff seeding already locked up, both teams knew they would face each other in the semi-final, and used their final game to become better acclimated to one another in preparations for that semi-final. The teams also met in last year’s semi-final with the heat prevailing over the host Kermodes 4-1.
Both teams pride themselves on strong, physical, defensive soccer, and the semi-final should be a low-scoring affair between two of the best defenses in the PACWEST. However, if the last game between both squads is any indication, the semi-final will not be without offensive chances, and if the semi-final is anything like their last meeting, this one may come down to a battle of the keepers.
The Heat’s keeper Christine Tallon was named to her second consecutive All-Star team, while Quest used a pair of keepers in Taylor Shantz and Tiana Gilchrist.
The 2013 PACWEST Provincial Soccer Championship Semi-Final between the UBC Okanagan Heat and Quest Kermodes will be held at Merle Logan Field Saturday, October 26th at 12:00 p.m. If the Heat defeat the Kermodes, they will meet the winner of Thompson Rivers University and Langara College Sunday, October 27th in the Provincial Final to determine the 2013 PACWEST Gold Medalist. The Final is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. If the Heat are unable to defeat the Kermodes, they will face the loser of TRU and Langara in the Bronze Medal game, which will be held on Sunday, October 27th at 10 a.m.
