NANAIMO, BC – After the 0-0 draw to conclude the 2013 PACWEST season versus the Quest Kermodes, the Heat felt confident heading into their semi-final match-up versus the same Kermodes Saturday in the first round of the 2013 PACWEST Provincial Soccer Championships. While many expected their semi-final match-up to play out to a very similar result as their meeting on October 20th, two quick Kermode goals quickly put that notion to rest, and Quest would go on to win the semi-final 3-1 to advance.
“It was such an unfortunate result,” lamented Heat coach Ashlee Davison. “We controlled the play and we had majority possession in their end. The entire team left their hearts on the field that game.”
Although the Heat controlled the majority of the match and kept play in the Quest end, a few mistakes was all it took for the Kermodes to surge ahead. Paige Ayer would get the Kermodes on the board first in the 12th minute, and would add the second goal of the game not 13 minutes later with a crack from 22 yards out. Maren Tarleton would add another in the 53rd minute, and Kirsten Dodds would tally the only Heat goal of the match late in the 70th minute.
“The girls all played with heart and deserved the win,” added Davison. “The ball simply didn’t bounce our way, and it’s frustrating that the odds weren’t in our favour in such an important game.”
A semi-final loss spoils what was a great season from the Heat in securing the third seed in the PACWEST. With their chance at a gold medal gone, the Heat will compete for bronze on Sunday, October 27th versus the Langara Falcons. Kick-off is scheduled for 10 a.m.
HEAT NOTES: Heat head coach Claire Paterson, who unfortunately became encumbered with food poisoning on Friday evening. Paterson found herself so sick that she was unable to even leave her hotel room, which left Davison to fill the head coach role for the Heat in Paterson’s absence….UBC Okanagan and Quest played in last fall’s PACWEST semi-final with the Heat prevailing 4-1 in Squamish.
