ABBOTSFORD, BC - The UBC Okanagan Heat Cross Country teams participated in the BC Athletics Provincial Championships on Saturday, winning both the women's and men's team titles.
The race served as the unofficial PACWEST Championship race between the only two PACWEST Cross Country teams, UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers University. The senior women’s 6K race had a field of 39 women, while the senior men’s 10K race comprised of a 37-man field. Both teams will join 23 other teams across Canada who qualified for the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Championships in Toronto on November 9th.
Scorers for the UBC Okanagan women’s team were Sandra Kilmartin (10th in 23:06.26), Michelle Blackburne (14th in 23:44.95), Alea Stockton (16th in 24:46.97) and Anna Merino (17th in 24:58.60). Displacers were Kendall Seasons (19th in 25:18.42) and Trish Metro (22nd in 25:28.53).
For the UBC Okanagan men, scorers were Jared Kesteven (24th in 36:01.57), Alex Hansen (25th in 36:09.85), Nick MacLean (26th in 36:22.67) and Josh Tremblay (27th in 36:36.91). Displacers were Mackenzie Wong (29th in 37:27.88) and Layne Richardson (31st in 39:52.12). Absent from competition was Cailin Libby.
Coaches Nikki and Nathan Reiter were satisfied with the team’s performances, indicating that they performed as needed for the day and look forward to getting the team ready to compete at CCAAs in two weeks.
