Kelowna, BC - Cold shooting from the Heat, coupled with a 33-20 first quarter in favour of the Huskies, proved to be too much to overcome for the Heat Saturday evening, as the University of Saskatchewan stormed UBC Okanagan Gymnasium to trounce the Heat 94-50.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game," commented the Heat's Sarah Allison following the game. "It just wasn't the type of game we wanted to bring tonight, especially after the way we played against Alberta."
Dalyce Emmerson (3rd year, Prince Albert, SK), who shot 8-13 from the field, led all scorers with 21 points. She was also a rebound shy of a double-double, in addition to three assists and four steals. Kiera Lyons (5th year, Ryley, AB), Riley Humbert (4th year, Saskatoon, SK), Kabree Howard (4th year, Regina, SK) and Kaylee Halvorson (2nd year, Regina, SK) all added nine points of their own for a balanced Saskatchewan attack.
On the Heat side, Emily Kanester (3rd year, Vernon, BC) led her team with 9 points, while Sarah Allison (3rd year, Surrey, BC) and Claire Elliott (1st year, North Vancouver, BC) added 8 points respectively. However, the Heat would shoot a combined 27% on the night, while allowing the Huskies to shoot a red-hot 52.5% from the field - a difference of 25.5%.
"Defensively, we need to be better," added Allison. "We can't allow teams to build early leads, but we're a fast and athletic team and we really need to focus on playing our game. This was a good early season test."
With the win, the fifth-ranked Huskies improve to 2-0 to begin the season, while the Heat begin in an early 0-2 hole to begin the season.
The Heat will face their first road action of the season next weekend, traveling to Calgary, AB to face the Mount Royal Cougars for a two-game weekend series at Kenyon Court. Both games are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. this Thursday and Friday and can be viewed on www.canadawest.tv.
