KELOWNA, BC - Another strong defensive showing by the UBC Okanagan Heat led to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-22) straight set victory over the Mount Royal Cougars on Sunday in Kelowna at UBC’s Okanagan campus gymnasium.
The Heat got off to a quick start in the first set, with outside hitter Brianna Beamish (3rd year, Surrey, BC) launching 5 kills and middle Katie Wuttunee (3rd year, North Vancouver, BC) tallying 4 herself. In the second set outside hitter Kaitlynn Given (2nd year, Kelowna, BC) showed herself to be an essential component to both the Heat offense and defense, getting up to 7 kills and 9 digs by the end of the second set.
In the third set the Cougars made a last surge, at one point gaining a five-point lead (4-9) that the Heat were able to recover from thanks in large part to a 9-1 run. The run took UBC Okanagan from 11-16 to 20-17, on to a third set win, and gave them the match in straight sets.
“I think we did a very good job of executing what we worked on all week,” commented Heat head coach Steve Manuel. “Hats off to our team and how they weathered the storm today. I’m very proud of how the team played and reacted to the match, especially the comeback in third set.”
“Defense is the mental part of the game and it’s easy to break in the back,” continued Manuel. “We’re getting better at not doing that and staying engaged. It’s coming and getting better all the time.”
Kaitlynn Given led the Heat attack with 11 kills and also made a strong defensive contribution with 15 digs. Fellow outside hitter Brianna Beamish launched 9 kills of her own. On the defensive end libero Lenai Schmidt (5th year, Vernon, BC) put up an impressive 22 digs. Middle Katy Klomps (2nd year, Surrey, BC) was named the Heat player of the game.
For the Cougars left side Fallon Middlemiss (4th year, Sherwood Park, AB) notched 5 kills on the day, while fifth year middle Julia Pasieka (Calgary, AB) had 4. Libero Tayler Smith (5th year, Edmonton, AB) logged 11 digs for her squad.
With the weekend sweep the fourth ranked Heat move up to 4-0, while the Cougars fall to 1-3. UBC Okanagan takes to the road next Friday to take on the Brandon University Bobcats, while Mount Royal returns home to take on the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday.
Although the Heat swept the Bobcats in Kelowna last season, they have yet to defeat Brandon on their home court. “Brandon is a very good team, ranked among the top in the country,” added Manuel. “[They’re] very experienced, have lots of depth and I expect a battle this weekend. We’re looking forward to it and getting on the road as a team.”
