KELOWNA, BC - After a five-set heartbreaker on Saturday, the UBC Okanagan Heat came back with a vengeance to win 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-23) and notch their first regular season victory in Sunday’s matchup with the Mount Royal Cougars in Kelowna.
“We started out pretty rough against Mount Royal and didn’t really start playing good volleyball until the 3rd and 4th sets [on Saturday],” reflected Heat head coach Greg Poitras. “We carried that through today [Sunday] and had some good repeat performances that we needed.”
Heat outside hitter Nate Speijer (5th year, Penticton, BC) smacked a commanding 20 kills and also led in digs with 11. Speijer put down 25 kills in the five-setter on Saturday, giving the fifth year 45 total kills in just eight sets this past weekend, which ended up being a split for the Heat. Third year Briercrest transfer and Heat player of the game Kyle Pankratz (Right Side, Surrey, BC) logged 8 kills and 7 digs on Sunday.
Fifth year Cougars outside hitter Colton deMan (Calgary, AB) hit 14 kills, while middle Jordan Lantz (5th year, Clyde, AB) had 7 on the afternoon. Libero Jordan Or (4th year, Burnaby, BC) led his team in digs with 11.
With the win UBC Okanagan improves to a record of 1-3, while Mount Royal falls to an even 2-2. The Heat will hit the road next Friday to take on the Brandon University Bobcats, while the Cougars will return home to take on the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday.
Coach Poitras looks forward to Friday’s matchup with the Bobcats. “We play one of the country’s top teams [next weekend]. We’re playing better volleyball, [but] we’re going to clean up some things in practice [this week] and see what we can do.”
All games will be live on canadawest.tv.
