LANGLEY, BC - Strong Spartan serving, coupled with dominant defensive play on the net, paved the way to victory Saturday night for host Trinity Western, who kept the Heat off-balance en route to the straight set victory 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-23) in Canada West women's volleyball action.
"We never really got good clean contacts," explained Heat head coach Steve Manuel following the contest. "We were always on the run, and we made poor decisions because of it."
Trinity Western would outblock the Heat by a margin of 13-4 over the course of the three sets, and although the Spartans only notched two service aces, the majority of their serves led to an inability for the Heat to get a quality first touch on the ball. As a result, no Heat hitter was able to must over five kills over the course of the game.
Leading the Spartans were Alicia Perrin and Sophie Carpentier, who combined for 26 kills and 11 block assists for Trinity Western. The Spartans had 24 block assists on the evening to the Heat's 6.
The Heat looked to finally find their rhythm in the third set, jumping out to the 21-15 advantage. Not to be outdone, Trinity Western would go on a 10-2 run in the final 12 points, with Perrin and Carpentier combining for seven of the Spartan's final ten points to best the Heat by two, 25-23.
The win pushes Trinity Western to 12-4, while the Heat are on a four-game losing streak which sees their record drop to 10-6.
Trinity Western will make their way to Kamloops, BC next weekend to face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, while the Heat will return home to face the Alberta Pandas from UBC's Okanagan campus gymnasium on January 24th and 25th.
HEAT NOTES - Kaitlynn Given (2nd year, Kelowna, BC) was forced to miss this game due to flu-like symptoms. As a result, Michelle Jakszuk (1st year, Gibsons, BC) earned her first start of her career. Chandler Proch (3rd year, Kelowna, BC) also started this game in favour of Emily Oxland (2nd year, North Vancouver, BC), her second start of the season.
