KELOWNA, B.C. - Amidst an otherwise disjointed night for the Heat women’s basketball squad, rookie Shenelle Tamminen (Calgary, AB) continued to impress as she led her team in an 11 point, seven rebound effort that would ultimately see the visiting Wesmen take down UBC Okanagan 72-45 in the Friday night Canada West game in Kelowna.
Tamminen saw 22 minutes of floor time while fellow rookie Claire Elliott (North Vancouver, BC) also saw significant minutes with 25 of her own.
“Both Shenelle and Claire are very good players,” said Heat veteran guard Sarah Allison (South Surrey, BC) of her younger teammates. “They’re smart, they see the floor well and they take their opportunities when they have to. Both of them had to work through their own adversity early on [in the season] … earning their way up, and I think they’ve both done a good job of that.”
Third-year guard Emily Kanester (Vernon, BC) was largely absent from the stat sheet tonight, despite piling up 37 points combined over her two previous meetings with the Wesmen. Tamminen was the only Heat scorer in double digits, with fourth-year Angela White (North Vancouver, BC) trailing with seven points and six rebounds. Elliott had seven points and three rebounds.
The Heat tried to play a high-tempo style with traps to force turnovers and get on the break. Unfortunately the Wesmen were too good at taking care of the rock while playing the Heat’s game better. Winnipeg forced 27 turnovers out of the Heat, 21 of which were steals.
Winnipeg’s Kerri Kuzbyt led all scorers with 15 points while collecting five rebounds and dishing out four assists. The Wesmen used some timely threes to widen the gap at the end of the second and start of the third quarter, and were 6-18 from that range. Dominant second and third quarters saw the Wesmen escape the Heat in 16-9 and 24-8 quarters, respectively.
Speaking about areas that the team is looking to address and correct moving forward to tomorrow’s game and beyond, Allison commented that “I think we’re having trouble consistently sticking with our identity as a team. We’re gritty, we’re tough, we’re athletic and we’re smart. We just need to find a way to show that game in and game out … We just need to play grittier and tougher tomorrow.”
Tomorrow the Heat will get the chance to be grittier when the host the 3-14 Manitoba Bisons with tip-off at 5 p.m., while the Wesmen head to Kamloops to face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
With the loss the Heat fall to 3-14 for the season, while the Wesmen continue their chase of the Dinos for the final playoff spot with their 9-8 record.
