PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - A goal in injury time by the Timberwolves denies the opportunity for UBC Okanagan Heat women’s soccer to clinch their first ever Canada West victory Sunday morning in a disappointing finish to the rematch versus UNBC in Prince George, as the match ends in 1-1 draw.
“It was [a] heart breaking result, the team played so well today [and] we deserved better,” said Heat coach Claire Paterson post game about her team’s effort.
Playing their second Canada West game, the Heat were in a tightly contested and physical rematch with the Timberwolves. With only minutes to spare, the Heat ladies let the victory slip through their hands when UNBC’s Sidney Ross beat her defender on the left wing and sent one just past Heat keeper Christine Tallon’s (5th year, Kamloops, BC) fingertips on the right side of the net.
“We needed to just close out the last two minutes but made a mistake that left us exposed at the back and UNBC capitalized,” Paterson added.
Fourth-year Hayley Carlson was first on the board when, in the 19th minute, she shot one past the UNBC keeper Jordan Hall off of a free kick from 20 yards out for her first goal of the season. The free kick was set up when a nice lead pass from defender Justine Drosdovech (3rd year, Kelowna, BC) to Carlson led a UNBC defender to commit a penalty.
Heat ladies applied pressure on UNBC goalkeeper Jordan Hall throughout the game as they out shot the Timberwolves in total shots at 24 to 12. Leading the attack was Kelowna Secondary School rookie Courtney Hemmerling and 4th year Vernon native Kirsten Dodds with seven and six total shots respectively.
Courtney Hemmerling hit the crossbar once today, but her best chance may have been in the 67th minute when her shot from the top right corner of the box sailed inches away from left post.
Michelle Smith (Vernon, BC), looking to ice the game in the 87th minute, made a spectacular play when she intercepted a ball in the midfield. Smith hit a gap in the defensive line and fired a shot square at the net but it bounced off the crossbar.
Fifth-year Heat keeper Christine Tallon turned away nine saves in the tie.
The UBC Okanagan Heat are now 0-0-2 for the season, and the Timberwolves are also 0-0-2.
Next up for the Heat will be their Canada West home opener this Friday and Saturday (Sep 12-13), when UBC Okanagan plays host to the Fraser Valley Cascades and Trinity Western Spartans, respectively. Both nights games will start at 5 p.m. at the Nonis Sports Field in Kelowna on the UBC Okanagan campus.
