KELOWNA, B.C. – The UBC Okanagan Heat women’s volleyball squad concluded their exhibition play Friday night when they visited Kamloops in the hope of keeping a positive preseason win ratio. Ultimately, last year’s Canada West Final Four Heat squad would be bested by the rebuilding WolfPack in four sets 3-1 (26-24,15-25,25-16,29-27).
Leading all hitters was TRU’s Lulia Pakhomenko (3rd year, Donetsk, Ukraine) with 16 kills in 32 chances. She also contributed nine digs in her team’s win.
The Kelowna team was lead by an ensemble performance by fourth-year middle Katy Klomps (Surrey, BC), who tallied 11 kills in 19 swings with two service aces, four solo blocks and six block assists.
First-year outside-hitter Siobhan Fitzpatrick (Kelowna, BC), who red shirted last season with a team bringing the vast bulk of its roster back, had 11 kills in 28 chances.
Returning for her fourth-year following a season as a red-shirt, libero Kailin Jones (Kelowna, BC) chipped in eight digs, as did third-year hitter Megan Festival (Calgary, AB). Former Canada West All-Star setter Emily Oxland (North Vancouver, BC), now in her third year captaining the offense, had 29 assists.
“We were tired but we didn’t give up,” said Heat coach Steve Manuel following the match. “We make a serve when we are tired at 27 and we would have been playing in the fifth set … I like my team and I like how we don’t give up. It’s a good group.”
UBC Okanagan , Thompson Rivers and Capilano all scrimmaged and did split squad training throughout the day.
The Heat wrap up their preseason exhibition play 2-2 while the WolfPack’s preseason will continue this weekend at the West Coast Classic in Vancouver.
The two teams won’t see each other again until their annual home-and-home following the December break on January 15 and 17.
