RICHMOND, B.C. – The Heat and Spartans began their tango Friday at the Richmond Oval, where TWU dispatched the Kelowna team in well-earned straight sets (25-18, 28-26, 25-18).
Third-year outside hitter Alex Swiatlowski (Victoria, BC) led the Heat offense with 17 kills to go with one block and a single ace.
Fourth-year right side Kyle Pankratz (Surrey, BC) was the defensive Stalwart for UBC Okanagan, tallying three blocks to go with his eight kills.

Langley Events Centre, Langley, B.C.
LANGLEY, B.C. – Not content to sit down quietly, the Heat were back at it Saturday at the Langley Events Centre with the Spartans again. Putting up a decidedly better fight than a night prior, UBC Okanagan managed to take the second set by a decisive eight points, though ultimately the Spartans would prevail in four sets (25-18, 17-25, 25-17, 25-17).
Third-year middle Jim Bell (Surrey, BC) and Pankratz each tallied 11 kills to lead the Heat. Bell would add two blocks and Pankratz one.
“Sets one, three, and four we put ourselves in a position to push our opponent but we lacked in scoring late in those sets,” Poitras said of the Saturday night contest. “[We] saw longer glimpses of the level we can play at. All things considered with our personnel right now we played one of the country’s top teams very well.”
The weekend concludes preseason exhibition for UBC Okanagan. The Heat open their Canada West regular season with a back-to-back at Alberta next Friday and Saturday at the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton.
The Spartans will meet with the Heat again the following weekend for UBC Okanagan’s weekend home opening October 17-18.
