The UBC Okanagan Heat women's golf team have won their fourth national medal in the past six years this past week after earning the bronze in Quebec.
LORETTE, Q.C. - The final round of 2014 PING CCAA national championships was washed out Friday due to heavy rain throughout Quebec City and the surrounding area, which would eventually force the cancellation of the third and final round. In all, the event was shortened down to 36 holes from 54 at the Club de Golf Lorette in Quebec, Qc.
As a result of the cancellation, the UBC Okanagan Heat women’s golf team finished with the national bronze medal.
In the individual standings Carolyn Lee finished tied for the third lowest score and took the individual bronze medal as well earning a tournament all-star.
The St. Lawrence Lions were officially crowned the National Champions on the women's side. All-Canadians Noemie Ouellette and Oceane Jacques, and their teammate Nicole Tieman, led the way for the Lady Lions who had forged a 9 stroke lead after 2 rounds. The defending champion Fraser Valley Cascades finished in second place.
In the individual standings, Noemie won the silver medal while Oceane took the bronze, in a tie with Carolyn Lee of UBC Okanagan. The winner of the gold medal in the individual competition was Lorelle Weavers from Niagara College. She finished in first place by shooting two consecutive rounds of 77, winning by 2 strokes over her closest rival.
Lee was consistent between rounds one and two for the front nine, but faltered just slightly on the back nine to shoot strokes over her first round recording of 39 strokes to wrap up with a 158 two-day total. She would have looked forward to a complete round three to catch up the two lost strokes, as that margin would end up being the difference between the team's silver and bronze at the tournament.
"[We] would have loved to play today so that we could try to close the two strokes gap," Lee commented after the awards ceremony. "[I'm] still really proud of our accomplishments as a team and as the conditions were tough."
The second year golfer from Calgary, AB, looks primed to make another trip or two back to the national championships for some more hardware in the future. Since Lee was awarded the individual bronze medal this time around, she was also selected to the tournament All-Star team.
Joining her on the all-star list were Weavers, Oullette, and Jacques.
Fellow sophomore Jessica Kozak (West Kelowna, BC) put in a two-day total of 195 (22nd overall), while first-year Emily Adams (Ladysmith, BC) wrapped up with a 167 result to tie for 10th.
On the men’s side, the Holland Hurricanes captured their first-ever CCAA National Championship title in the men’s division. All-Canadian Eric Locke led the Hurricanes to a tournament-best overall score of 286 in Round 2 on Thursday. Holland placed three shots ahead of the Camosun Chargers to earn gold. The defending champions University of the Fraser Valley Cascades were forced to settle for bronze, six strokes back of the Hurricanes. The host St. Lawrence Lions finished in fourth place, one-shot back of a medal.
In men’s individual play, Jarred Callbeck of Camosun College fired rounds of 68-70 for a one-shot victory. Callbeck had a 36-hole total of 138 to sit at 6-under. Hugo Bernard (139) of Cégep André-Laurendeau fired a 68 in difficult conditions on Thursday which earned him a silver medal. Adam Poulin (140) of Champlain St. Lawrence finished third at 4-under. An impressive total of 10 golfers were under par after two rounds.
The UBC Okanagan Heat men just missed qualifying for the national championships finishing two strokes behind the Camosun Chargers at the provincial championships held at the Okanagan Golf Club on October 4-5.
At the Closing Ceremony and Awards Banquet, the CCAA announced the tournament All Stars.
Recipients of the PING Fair Play Awards were Brennan Smith of St. Lawrence College Kingston and Elizabeth Stewart of MacEwan University.
The 2015 National Championships will be hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley.
