2nd Star: #10 Katy Klomps, UBC Okanagan (Volleyball)
In UBC Okanagan’s two women’s volleyball wins this past weekend Katy Klomps was her usual dominant self, scoring 12 points on both Friday and Saturday night to help slow down the defending CIS national champion Manitoba Bisons and power the Heat to 3-1 and 3-0 victories in Kelowna on Friday and Saturday respectively.
Friday night Katy would have eight kills in the four sets but efficiently scored at a .438 rate. Katy also was a force at the net with six block assists and served tough, scoring an ace in the Heat’s four set win.
On Saturday, UBC Okanagan took the Bisons out in three sets and Klomps was one again a force, as she finished with seven kills and a sublime .636 rate, while not committing an attack error. Klomps was clearly a weapon defensively with five blocks, and once again threw in a service ace for good measure.
Both nights she scored 12 points and on both nights, with Katy in the middle the Heat were able to slow down Manitoba’s kill specialist, Rachel Cockrell, holding her to her lowest kill totals on the year, under five a set, being the first team to do so in 2014.
UBC Okanagan, who have twice defeated the #1 team in the country and have beaten the defending champs twice, will play the UBC Thunderbirds, the 2013-14 Canada West Champions. The action takes place at War Memorial this Friday and Saturday night and can be viewed on CanadaWest.TV.
