WINNIPEG, MB– The UBC Okanagan Heat nearly pulled an impressive come-from-behind upset of the No. 8 University of Winnipeg Wesmen in Winnipeg Friday evening as the hosts would outlast their visitors 15-12 in a fifth set for the 3-2 clincher.
The Heat were led by third-year middle Jim Bell (Surrey, BC) with 17 kills and three blocks. Outside hitter Lars Bornemann (Victoria, BC) tallied eight kills, while setter Kristof Schlagintweit (Abbotsford, BC) recorded 43 assists, four service aces and four blocks.
A steady opening by the Wesmen saw them in a 16-13 lead at the technical break of the opening set. The Heat would breathe down Winnipeg’s necks in a close 20-19 affair until Setter Josh McKay reeled off five straight points for a 25-19 victory in that frame.
Once again Winnipeg held a lead through the technical break 16-11 in the second, and once again they would not let up as they seized a 25-18 second set and a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Not ones to back down, the Heat gained momentum in the third set as they would lead 16-11 in the third set break, eventually clawing their way to a 25-19 decision to force a fourth.
A rocky start in the fourth would be recovered by UBC Okanagan, who ultimately walked off with a 25-19 set to force what would become an exciting fifth.
A back-and-forth battle to an 8-8 tie would be broken as the Heat took a 10-8 lead in the fifth. Ultimately, the Wesmen climbed back on top to eventually take the 15-12 decider.
Fifth-year outside Tom Douglas-Powell led the Wesmen with a match-high 22 kills. Third year outside Casey Schouten followed with 19. Logan Brennen led the team in digs with 11. Setter Josh McKay had a solid match finishing with 43 assists, four service aces and four blocks.
The Heat fall to 0-9 for the season while the top-10 Wesmen improve to 6-1.
The Wesmen and Heat will continue their two match series on Saturday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. scheduled start local time. 12:30 p.m. (PST).
