KELOWNA, B.C. – The winless Nanaimo Rugby Club hosted the undefeated UBC Okanagan Heat Saturday afternoon for a women’s BC Rugby Union First Division contest at May Bennett Pioneer Park in Nanaimo, BC.
With their fifth win in a row UBC Okanagan are in sole possession of first place with just one game left to play in the November schedule.
“When we arrived at the field @ 9 a.m., it was uncertain if we could get the game off as the field was frozen,” said head coach Rob O’Brien. “However, with some sun and time the field warmed enough to allow for an 11:30 am start.”
To open the scoring the home team pushed hard in the first half and scored the first try at the 10 minute mark. That would be the only lead enjoyed by the Nanaimo Hornets as UBC Okanagan would respond with a Kate Smith (Abbotsford, BC) try just 10 minutes later, when she broke out and raced to score. Not long after Smith’s marker Jordan Pitman (Calgary, AB) would follow up with a try of her own off a strong run.
Pittman’s try was converted by Chloe Worrall (West Kelowna, BC) to bring the score at half to 12 - 5.
The Heat team channeled their intensity in a positive manner in the second half after a physical first half and began a series of impressive offensive attacks characterized by an endless run of UBC Okanagan players breaking free for long runs.
Emma Graham (Merritt, BC) started it off with an impressive run into the end zone to score the first of her two tries on the day. This was followed by Hayley Fiebelkorn (Salmon Arm, BC) who broke a tackle at the UBC Okanagan 30 metre line and sprinted past the opposition again for the first of two tries.
With the flood gates opened up Aliyah Rodominski (Merritt, BC), Kelsey Wuerstl (Calgary, AB) and Leandra Carino (Ottawa, ON) all scored tries to bring the total in the half to seven tries.
Chloe Worrall converted 5 tries on the day to add 10 points to the final score.
The undefeated UBC Okanagan squad will travel to Connaught Park in Vancouver next Saturday to play the Meralomas Rugby Club at 11:30 a.m.
