CALGARY, A.B. - The UBC Okanagan Heat were defeated by the Mount Royal Cougars in an upset loss on Friday night. This was the Heat’s first lost since November 1st against UBC. The number one team in the CIS was overtaken by the underdogs MRU on home court by 3-2 (Set Scores: 25-22, 13-25, 25-15, 17-25, 17-5).
Strong offensive efforts were given by the Heat’s Mryte Schön and Katelynn Given. Unfortunately, this was not enough to combat the performance of the MRU Cougars and lead point scorer, Fallon Middlemirss, who dominated with 18 kills and 15 digs on her senior night.
Coming close to the end of her career, Schön improved on her stellar performance from Thursday night, and lead the Heat with 12 kills and 15 points. This week’s performance against the MRU Cougars has been her best to date, as she showed dominant on the UBC Okanagan team.
The hype of the senior day helped the Cougars, led by Middlemirss whom is graduating this year, clinch the first set by a small margin of 25-22, on a kill by the Cougars’ Robyn Potolicki.
UBC Okanagan dominated the second set going up 20-10 on the first 30 rallies. The Cougars tried to claw back, but couldn't return UBC Okanagan’s offensive attack. The Heat swept the second set 25-13 with consistent serving from the Heat’s Emily Oxland, serving 8 in a row.
The Heat were overtaken in the third set by the Cougars who won two big six point stretches in the middle of the set. The Heat fell behind the Cougars and failed to maintain a grasp on the set. Nicky Zalasky had an amazing kill to win the set 25-15 in favour of Mount Royal.
UBC Okanagan came back strong in the fourth set winning several consistent rallies. The Cougars fought back gaining a couple of points; however, the Heat had already pulled away with the set. The Heat won the fourth set 25-17 on a block by Megan Festival and Katy Klomps.
The Heat failed to clinch the game in the fifth set against the Cougars, who carried their momentum forward to dominate the last frame. MRU began with a six point run and buried the Heat's chances early. Too little too late, UBC Okanagan called a timeout at 12-4; unfortunately, they were unable to produce a comeback against the Mount Royal Cougars. Senior Fallon Middlemiss sealed her final home game in style with the kill, giving MRU a 15-7 set victory.
Mount Royal improves to 5-17 on the season. They will conclude their regular season next weekend when they travel up to Alberta to play the Pandas.
UBC Okanagan drops to 17-5 and but continues to lead the Canada West conference. They are currently ranked #1 in the CIS.
