EDMONTON – Last season the MacEwan University Griffins finished the season with a national bronze medal around their necks, albeit in a different league. This season, the Griffins will face a much tougher task with the move into the Canada West league, but appear to be up to the challenge.
Megan Wood, the ACAC Player of the Year in 2014, is back for her third season in the maroon and white. A dynamic player, Wood has the ability to shoot the ball from nearly anywhere, inside or out, creating numerous matchup issues.
The returning cast will also include veteran starters Kelly Fagan and Kendall Lydon. Fagan heads into her fourth year with the Griffins, while Lydon enters her second year after previously transferring from the University of Alberta. With a short bench this season, both Fagan, a post player, and Lydon, a guard, will be counted on to be workhorses this season along with Wood.
Understanding the upcoming landscape, head coach Rob Poole recruited several key players to immediately fill key roles, including a pair of guards in Kelly O'Hallahan and Kari Kubinec. O'Hallahan, a former All-Canadian and Grande Prairie Regional College transfer, and Kubinec, a University of Alberta at Augustana transfer, bring pedigree and experience to a Griffins squad that will require stability as they make their league transition. The pair will also help fill the void left by fifth year graduate Bayan Kurd.
